Grameen removed the need for collateral or legally enforceable contracts, promoted credit as a fundamental human right, and made women and the poorest its first priority. In contrast to most banks, which require endless paperwork, Grameen lent to people who were largely illiterate. And, rather than expecting people to come to it, it despatched "bicycle bankers" to rigorously select borrowers and their projects....
